Migration from legacy AWS account to the new one

Background:

We were approached by a client who had an old legacy AWS account with manual configuration and deployment processes. Their deploys were running with errors due to human error and they were looking to migrate to a new AWS account with more efficient and automated processes.

Challenges:

The main challenge was to migrate their existing environments to the new AWS account without any disruption to their business operations. Additionally, we had to address the issues with their manual configuration and deployment processes and implement an automated infrastructure as code solution to improve efficiency and reduce errors.

Solution:

To address the challenges faced by the client, our engineers developed a comprehensive solution that included the following:

Infrastructure as code: We used Terraform to develop code for all stages (DEV, QA, PreProd, Prod) to automate the infrastructure and eliminate manual configuration errors.

CI/CD: We developed a Gitlab CI pipeline that integrated with the Terraform code to automate the deployment process and ensure consistency across all environments.

Speed optimization: To improve the deployment speed, we optimized the process by reducing the deployment time from 2 hours to 5 minutes per deployment.

Cost optimization: We optimized the cost of the AWS account by using reserved and spot EC2 instances, which helped to reduce the cost by 23%.

Results:

The migration project was completed successfully, and the client’s business operations were not disrupted during the migration process. The new infrastructure as code solution enabled the client to eliminate manual configuration errors and ensure consistency across all environments. The automated deployment process reduced deployment time and improved efficiency, while the cost optimization measures helped to reduce the cost of the AWS account.
