Application and database production backups restoring automation

Built automation process for production backups restoring to test environments (200 VMs). Reduced the recovery control time from 12 hours to 1 hour.

The Challenge
Fintech company has had to develop automation scripts for weekly application and database restoring of production financial system backups to test environments.

The Solution
Database backups restoring: Automation scripts every week concurrently restore production MSSQL backups from HP StoreOnce backup system to test environments. There are 4 test environments. Each environment includes 15 instances of MS SQL Server 2016 running on VMware vSphere 6.7 virtual machines. Automation scripts developed on Powershell 5.1.

Application backups restoring: Automation scripts every week concurrently restore production application backups from FTP server to test environments. There are 4 test environments. Each environment includes 45 instances of Windows Server 2016 and RHEL 7.6 hosts running on VMware vSphere 6.7 virtual machines. Automation scripts developed on Ansible 2.9.1.
